The Happy Collaborationists Exhibition Space is pleased to announce the third show to be part of our one show per month curriculum. The BoxxShow, curated by Dain Oh and Nate Hitchcock, is based on Boxxblog (http://boxxblog.blogspot.com), an online blog and curatorial experiment.

The exhibition will feature works by Dain Oh, Chris Collins, Wendy Spacek and Ilia Ovechkin. Aditional decorations will be provided by Dain Oh, Nate Hitchcock and the Happy Collaborationists.

"The cube is a Platonic solid, also called the regular hexahedron. The term is derived from Plato's notion of a regular solid out of four classical elements: earth, air, water and fire. The metaphorical conception of an infinite line connecting nature is extremely beautiful; it is the celebratory painting of the beginning of human logic.

A box functions as a tabla rasa by taking the form as a symbolic and physical container to absorb and/or mimic the containing object. Its utopic and minimal simplicity is also open to intricate physical and emotional complexity and can create infinite amount of elaborate patterns and structures. It is the ultimate
metaphor and it is ubiquitous. However, its existence is so modest and tranquil that we often do not recognize living within a box. It is a child of mother nature and something that we continue to struggle with; we are constantly trying to be "outside the box." Before this perilous revolution, we must understand and appreciate its symbiotic nature with humans."

I haven't posted here in awhile. I apologize. So much stuff had/has happened past few months, and I am still exhausted.

I just had a thought though that people, particularly artists who deal with boxes as their subjects usually become very obsessive of the subject. Boxes attract. I think one of the reasons why this might be is because boxes are a representation of most common/basic forces on Earth: horizontal and vertical lines. (relative to gravity)

I do not have many examples off the top of my head, but Nate just sent me a link that made me think of this.

I've been lazy with my blogging. I went to this show on May 10.

H3X3N is a group of Computer Witches who have built an enchanted cube
that casts magical spells on computers. This cube, called IX, is a
New Media Artwork that will be shown at DEADTECH, an art and
technology center and gallery in Chicago, this Saturday May 10. The
IX cube casts spells on Windows, Macintosh and Linux computers,
hacking and hexing these operating systems. IX combines traditional
stage magic tricks and irony as elements of Hacker culture to create
an Interactive Installation and Software Art project. IX has been
exhibited previously at the Interactivos? exhibition at the Media Lab
Madrid in Madrid, Spain.

H3X3N, a collaborative computer witchcraft club from Chicago, Mexico
City Mexico and Linz Austria, is currently composed of Mark Beasley,
Sandra Rosas Ridolfi, jake elliott, tamas kemenczy, Alex Inglizian,

The Division Museum of Ceramics and Glassware is part of the fine tradition of museums and private collecting institutions in New York City. Located at 141 Division Street in Chinatown, New York, the Museum is the only institution in New York City to focus its collection on contemporary ceramics and glassware.

Through a sociological study of collecting impulses in contemporary culture, the museum's initial researchers learned that owning a collection of ceramics or glassware proved to be a common denominator of both collecting and non-collecting individuals. Within the fields of both historical archaeology and anthropology the discovery of ceramic fragments have come to define the activities and values of lost cultures. We preserve these contemporary artifacts in the service of future historical impact.

Each item owned by the museum has been de-accessioned from the collections of the Friends and Founders of the Museum. While the collecting interests of the Friends vary immensely in terms of subject matter, specialization, and enthusiasm, each individual possesses a large enough group of ceramic and glass items to be considered a collection worthy of archiving. These items have been de-accessioned from their former owners because they are cracked, chipped, or shattered. It is the mission of the museum to preserve these artifacts in their current condition. Grow Cube is a flash game. IT'S SO MUCH FUN.

Here are the directions:
Click panels in your selected order.
Items you click will grow and grow with each turn.
You will complete the game when all panels' level is max.
They effect each other as they grow.
So you have to think about the clicking order.

It's pretty hard..I'm not gonna lie. It took me a while to beat it..It's really addictive as well so plan on wasting quite a bit of time when you start playing.

Experimental display type created in Illustrator.

The intention was to make a typeface with only the most crucial elements of each letter represented, all while fitting each into a uniform size to allow no-brainer kerning, and uniform line lengths. Some embellishments, like curved corners, were added to make it feel a little more friendly.

Spaces should not be used. This is not really made to convey information clearly so the user should be willing to let go and let the message make it to the reader if they are willing to take the time to decipher.

The set on the right side is an attempt to get a more even colour in the large sets of type.

Other notes:
- The 'I' is set so that, if needed aesthetically, it can be flipped to make it more bottom heavy or to match with the counters of surrounding letters; e.g "C-I-S"
- The 'X' is problematic and I am trying to find a more elegant solution for it.
-No punctuation or numbers are planned, but I may add them once I get a few weights made
-Please ask before using in any work. I will be more than happy to allow you to use it if you email me for permission and give credit.

In my opinion, Boxes' simplicity and abstract minimalism bring out the maximum contrast and attention that is beneficial to the exhibited art works. A box functions as a blank, white canvas. Its functionality is also related to the contrast and relationship between the "non"-colors: black and white. They are also clean and sleek. They look nice.
However, I am kind of getting sick of this trend in contemporary art. Do not get me wrong, I LOVE boxes and minimalism. But most "prestigious" or/and common contemporary art is incorporating this kind of aesthetics some way or another, and I don't like it when things are getting overused. I love the beginning of a trend, but never towards the end.
I'm glad boxes and art happened because it does make sense and has worked out quite well. But I guess I'm looking for something else, now.
...I always do this thing where I complain about something but never give a solution. Perhaps a possibility for a new exploration.

The Monument by Elizabeth Bishop

Now can you see the monument? It is of wood
built somewhat like a box. No. Built
like several boxes in descending sizes
one above the other.
Each is turned half-way round so that
its corners point toward the sides
of the one below and the angles alternate.
Then on the topmost cube is set
a sort of fleur-de-lys of weathered wood,
long petals of board, pierced with odd holes,
four-sided, stiff, ecclesiastical.
From it four thin, warped poles spring out,
(slanted like fishing-poles or flag-poles)
and from them jig-saw work hangs down,
four lines of vaguely whittled ornament
over the edges of the boxes
to the ground.
The monument is one-third set against
a sea; two-thirds against a sky.
The view is geared
(that is, the view's perspective)
so low there is no "far away,"
and we are far away within the view.
A sea of narrow, horizontal boards
lies out behind our lonely monument,
its long grains alternating right and left
like floor-boards--spotted, swarming-still,
and motionless. A sky runs parallel,
and it is palings, coarser than the sea's:
splintery sunlight and long-fibred clouds.
"Why does the strange sea make no sound?
Is it because we're far away?
Where are we? Are we in Asia Minor,
or in Mongolia?"
　　　　　　　　　An ancient promontory,
an ancient principality whose artist-prince
might have wanted to build a monument
to mark a tomb or boundary, or make
a melancholy or romantic scene of it...
"But that queer sea looks made of wood,
half-shining, like a driftwood, sea.

It's like a stage-set; it is all so flat!
Those clouds are full of glistening splinters!
What is that?"

"It's piled-up boxes,
outlined with shoddy fret-work, half-fallen off,

all the conditions of its existence,

It is an artifact
of wood. Wood holds together better
than sea or cloud or and could by itself,
much better than real sea or sand or cloud.
It chose that way to grow and not to move.
The monument's an object, yet those decorations,
carelessly nailed, looking like nothing at all,
give it away as having life, and wishing;
wanting to be a monument, to cherish something.
The crudest scroll-work says "commemorate,"
while once each day the light goes around it
like a prowling animal,
or the rain falls on it, or the wind blows into it.
It may be solid, may be hollow.
The bones of the artist-prince may be inside
or far away on even drier soil.
But roughly but adequately it can shelter
what is within (which after all
cannot have been intended to be seen).
It is the beginning of a painting,

Cube (1997)

Cube (1997) is a movie directed by Vincenzo Natali. I watched it when I was only 10 or something so I don't remember much of it. All I remember is the color red and blades for some reason. And some part of the plot, too. I haven't seen the sequels. I heard they were pretty bad.. But here are some interesting and relatively "cubey" but cheesy trivia facts about the film that I got from IMDb:

-Shot on a single 14'x14' set, made to look like many different cubes through the use of different-colored panels.
-All of the characters are named after prisons: Quentin (San Quentin, California), Holloway (England), Kazan (Russia), Rennes (France), Alderson (Alderson, West Virginia), Leaven and Worth (Leavenworth, Kansas).
-Not only are the characters named after prisons but they reflect the prisons themselves. Example: Kazan (the mentally challenged character), in Russia is a disorganized prison. Rennes (the "mentor") was a jail that pioneered many of today's prison policies. Quentin (the detective) is known for its brutality. Holloway is a women's prison, and Alderson is a prison where isolation is a common punishment. Leavenworth runs to a rigid set of rules (Leaven's mathematics), and the new prison is corporately owned and built (Worth, hired as an architect).
-To show their support for the Toronto film industry, the special effects company C.O.R.E. did the digital effects for free.
-Director Vincenzo Natali directed a follow-up short film in which we see what is outside the cube. Natali has made a solemn vow never to reveal what was outside the cube, and destroyed the video years ago.
-One of the earlier drafts of the script had the characters finding bizarre alien food. The idea was subsequently lost after it gave too clear a definition as to who was responsible for the cube.
-The handles on all the hatches are industrial die holders used for cutting threads on rods and available in any hardware shop.

Cubes are SO FUCKING metaphorical and all that blabla shit, it's not even funny.

me thinks.
Of course, one can and might try to think "outside the box," but that only brings one to fucked up places, doesn't it? (I'm trying to be as extreme and biased as I can get, over here..) But then again utopia cannot exist--and that is why the term exists--it's like communism. A grid might be the simplest or the most basic metaphor of what is generally called a utopia. Grid allows one to get from point A to B without any distraction. It is the fastest and easiest way to get somewhere. Even diagonal lines eventually form grids. FOR GOD'S SAKE IT'S ONLY LINES.
